Raising the Timbers

“Double KF Ranch”, a rustic timber frame residence located in the Foothills West of Fiddletown, California, was designed and constructed by Ken Finley Construction. Mortise and tenon, an extremely strong, tight-fitting joinery system was used to join all the hand-hewn timbers. No nails or metal fasteners were required, only wooden oak pegs were inserted into the joints using a large wooden mallet.

With the Great Room soaring thirty feet high, hand-hewn hammer trusses were installed to off set the beauty of this room. All of the timber pieces and hammer trusses fit perfectly which were first hewn then accurately measured on the ground before raising each piece into place.

This method of home construction, Mortise and Tenon, dates back hundreds of years, is rarely done today, and is revisited on this unique timber frame home.
